To come to market with a PHEV minivan gets my money.

Kinja'd!!!

We currently spend ~$3000 per year in gas, plus another $500-700 in wear & tear. The grocery, preschool, elementary, soccer fields, and library are all within 10 miles. Chrysler, get that Pacifica to market soon. Although my ideal would be a more powerful Volt drivetrain....

I keep saying I’d buy a mild plug in hybrid if costs came down a bit. Work is 15 miles away. Drive to work on battery, charge there drive home. Then petrol engine for longer journeys. Perfect.

I'd buy a plug in when it becomes cost effective to do so. Problem is, I think that's a way off still. I feel we're probably 10-15 years away from really having the proper battery technology that will bring prices down to a more affordable level. Why spend 35k for a Bolt, when you can get a Corolla/Civic/3 for 20k that will get 40+mpg?

Outlander PHEV.

Closest thing I can think of. I know it’s not a minivan (but it really is, on stilts with less practicality) I see them EVERYWHERE here in The Netherlands. Both fuel and heavy cars are not cheap here.

So will that be cash...or charge! Yeah, I’m ready for the Pacifica PHEV, too.

Problem is, if you’re coming from a paid-off vehicle, once you factor in the cost of a new vehicle (and higher energy bills if applicable) you’ll rarely break even.

Problem with it is, it’s vaporware for the US - Mitsubishi keeps trying to make it faster for US preferences, and it’s just not working.

Ouch, I had no idea. I haven’t kept up on US car news. I had incorrectly assumed that Mitsubishi being a struggling manufacturer would bring a HYBRID SUV to the land of SUVs in an attempt to you know... not fail as a business.

The problem is that 0-60 MPH in about 11 seconds is far too slow for the US market. Consider that in the 2.4 liter Outlander in the US, Edmunds got 9.2 seconds, and considered it to feel slow. They found the 3.0 V6 Outlander to be better, at 7.6 seconds to 60.

As I understand, they’ve tried unique battery chemistry for the US for higher power output, even. Combine that with Mitsubishi’s existing reputation, and that doesn’t bode well for the reliability of whatever they do end up launching.

Consider that the Pacifica Hybrid isn’t much bigger, and has a 16 kWh battery (meaning there’s more EV mode power available naturally, than the Outlander’s 12 kWh battery - also, the 16 kWh battery gets the full $7500 tax credit in the US, where a 12 kWh battery does not), and a 3.6 liter V6 instead of the 2.0 liter I4.

It’ll likely be a Pacifica so there’s still time to rephrase it so you’re not stuck with one of the least reliable brands on the market

OP, what prototype is the lead image? Oldsmobile? Definitely looks like late 80s/early 90s GM
